Functional Resume Example

When would I want to use a functional resume?

A functional resume format is preferred in situations where:

  • you have had a lengthy gap in your work history
  • your most recent experience isn’t necessarily your strongest experience for the type of job you’re seeking
  • where you want to change career fields
  • where your experience was gained through volunteer work or hobbies

What is the format of a functional resume?

With a functional resume, you group your experience, whether from volunteer work or paid employment, into key functional areas that are relevant to the type of position you are seeking.

You don’t need to put this experience in chronological order or tie the experience to a particular job or volunteer opportunity

After the Experience section of your resume, you then add an Employment or Work History section where you list in reverse chronological order your employers and volunteer experience.

By using a functional resume, you first show a potential employer your experience and skills to “hook” them before you show where or when the experience and skills were gained.

The format of a functional resume is:

  1. Your Contact Information
  2. Objective
  3. Professional Summary
  4. Experience Grouped into Key Functional Areas
  5. Employment or Work History in Reverse Chronological Order
  6. Skills
  7. Education
